Adopting a Potcake

Most of our puppies have been found abandoned, without their moms, or surrendered to the Bahamas Humane Society by owners who refuse to spay/neuter their pets. Our mission is to give these sweet little babies some much-needed TLC and work very hard to get them healthy and off to their forever homes.

Our potcake puppies have a very sweet and loving nature towards humans because they’ve been cared for and loved by the amazing Claire Cash (Mama Claire) - the founder and puppy caregiver of Potcake Puppy Palace in The Bahamas.

After our pups arrive in Canada, they may seem frightened or nervous since they are going through some big changes. They go from living the island life with 50 other puppies to a big, cold, noisy city without their siblings or friends. Patience and understanding are of the utmost importance with our little potcakes. When all is said and done, adopting a potcake will be one of life’s greatest gifts: endless love, undeniable loyalty, and a forever friend.

Our adoption process is detailed and strict to make sure that we are matching our pups with a loving and committed home. We make sure to take the time to get to know you and match you with a puppy that would be the right fit for your family and lifestyle.

Learn more about what to expect from this process below.

Step 1: Apply to Adopt

If all of this sounds great to you, we invite you to begin the adoption process by filling out our Adoption Application.

The application allows us to learn more about you and why you’d like to rescue a potcake. All of our applications are reviewed by our adoption team, and you will be contacted for an interview if we think you’d be a good fit.

Step 2: Interview

Once we have received your application, one of our adoption coordinators will review it and reach out to you via email regarding next steps, the first of which is scheduling a video interview.

This gives us the opportunity to get to know you and everyone else (including children and other fur babies!) living in the household. It’s also the perfect time for you to ask any other questions you might have about potcakes our the process, and learn more about things like the decompression process, crate training, integrating your potential new pup with children or other animals, socialization, and recommended food.

Step 3: Reference Check & Final Approval

Following the interview, it is important for us to be able to speak with two references so that we can get an even better look into the type of home our potcake would be going into. We love to hear from friends and loved ones to confirm that you are the right fit.

Assuming all goes well with your references, we move into final approval. You will be notified at this point that you have been approved to adopt one of our lovable potcake puppies.

Step 4: Matching Process

This is one of the most important steps of the adoption process. You may have your heart set on one of our pups, but at the end of the day we want to make sure that we are creating the perfect match for your lifestyle and family. Some of our potcakes are calm and lazy, while others could have a ton of energy all of the time! Some do great with young children or other dogs, while others may be their best selves when they have the opportunity to live alone in a home.

We consider everything we have learned about you, and all that we know of our available pups, to match you with one that will be set up for success in their forever home.

Step 5: Adoption Agreement

Once we have spoken to you about your new pup, it’s time to bring them home! This involves completing our adoption agreement and adoption fee.

We always try to keep the cost to adopt as low as possible. Included in the adoption fee is:

  • the cost of travel to get your pup from the Bahamas

  • puppy vaccinations

  • rabies

  • deworming

  • flea/tick prevention

  • heartworm prevention

  • tick illness blood test

  • fecal test

  • a vet check up in Canada

  • foster expenses.

Due to this, the price depends on current travel and vet rates as well as if the pup has been spayed or neutered (based on situation and age).

We look forward to receiving your application to adopt a truly amazing potcake puppy from The Bahamas. These little pups will be forever grateful that they had the opportunity to be rescued into a loving forever home.

If you can’t adopt, foster.

Without our trusted fosters, we have nowhere for our pups to go until they can be matched with their adopter, often forcing us to leave them behind even if they have the opportunity to leave The Bahamas.
