Become a foster

Fosters save lives. We need fosters so that we can bring pups to Canada and the US who are ready for adoption to make space at the shelter in Nassau. Without fosters, there is no place for these puppies to wait to find their forever home. That’s where you come in!

We provide you with the supplies that you need as well as access to veterinary care; all that we ask in return is that you love the pup as if it were your own until we can find a match and get it adopted. Your main job as a foster parent is to show our little sweet cakes their first taste of what a real forever home would feel like by giving them a nurturing and safe environment that allows them to explore, learn and grow with love and understanding.

Already have a dog of your own? What about young children? We ask that you fill out an application form so that we can learn more about you and your situation to make sure we are matching you with the right foster pup.

What it means to foster

Becoming a foster means you are committing to taking in a foster pup for 1-3 months. We provide you with all of the supplies that you’d need for the pup while they are in your care such as a leash, harness, food, and more depending on individual needs.

Most of our potcakes are new to Canada and the overall home environment so they will need your help to learn the basics such as how to sit, come, walk on a leash, where to sleep at night, and where to go potty.

One requirement for becoming a foster is having the availability to bring the pup to a vet appointment (vet costs covered by us) that will be booked with your schedule in mind. If you don’t have a vehicle to get your pup to the appointment, we can work with you to make it happen.

We understand it is a lot to open your home to a new pup. We do our best to make sure we are matching you with the right potcake to make sure the experience is as seamless and enjoyable as possible for both you and the pup!

Step 1 is completing an application form. The application allows us to learn more about you and why you’d like to foster a potcake. All of our applications are reviewed by our foster team, and you will be contacted for an interview if we think you’d be a good fit.

Step 2: Interview Once we have received your application, one of our foster coordinators will review it and reach out to you to schedule a video interview. This gives us the opportunity to get to know you and everyone else (including children and other fur babies!) living in the household. It’s also the perfect time for you to ask any other questions you might have about potcakes or the process.

Step 3: Reference Check & Final Approval Following the interview, it is important for us to be able to speak with references. Assuming all goes well with your references, we move into final approval. You will be notified at this point that you have been approved to foster one of our lovable potcake puppies.

Step 4: Foster adventure begins Once you are approved, the foster adventure begins! We will match you with a pup who is waiting to find their forever home - get excited for lots of snuggles and kisses. We should also warn you that foster fails are a real thing…who could blame you?!

The process

We know how much time you are giving to make sure our potcakes have a loving foster, and we are so thankful for your help. Without you, many pups miss out on the opportunity to find their forever home. You will always hold a special place in your foster pups’ heart (and ours).
